Schering-Plough Corporation
has a long and rich heritage with pharmaceutical marketing, sales,
research and production dating back well into the 1800s. Today,
Schering-Plough is a global pharmaceutical company with a significant
presence in Europe and Canada (EUCAN) and an employee base in excess
of 7,000 in this region and 30,500 employees globally. The company
is led by one of the world’s most dynamic and respected Chief
Executive Officer, Fred Hassan.
Under new leadership that arrived at the company in 2003, the New
Schering-Plough began a fundamental transformation, changing from
a decentralized company to a company with greater global operational
focus and strong functional alignment to meet the needs of its customers.
Today, we are building the foundation for long-term, sustainable
growth, while remaining committed to business integrity, quality
and compliance in everything we do. Our goal is to provide a steady
flow of innovative, science-based medicines and services, while
earning the trust of the physician, patients, and customers we serve.
Our new customer-focused approach provides a global outlook and
global efficiencies, while allowing for the local focus to remain
on our customers.
Pharmaceutical Products
This year, sales in the EUCAN region continue to grow, lead by our
key pharmaceutical products. In 2004, France was the company’s
biggest operation outside of the United States in terms of sales
in the EUCAN region, followed by Italy, Spain, Germany, Canada,
the UK, Greece, Sweden, and Belgium, respectively. Growth in all
of these markets has been driven by innovative new product introductions
in key therapeutic areas.
In the region, Schering-Plough introduced several major new pharmaceutical
products during the past five years. Among these products were:
• REMICADE, the only biologic therapy in the European Union
for rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease, ankylosing spondylitis,
and psoriatic arthritis.
• EZETROL, the first in a new class of cholesterol medicines
that inhibits absorption of cholesterol in the intestine.
• INEGY, a cholesterol-lowering tablet containing EZETROL
and Merck & Co., Inc.’s statin Zocor, designed to provide
powerful LDL cholesterol reduction through dual inhibition of the
two sources of cholesterol, has successfully completed the European
Union Mutual Recognition Process (MRP). The MRP process began in
July 2004, following the approval of INEGY in Germany, which served
as the reference member state.
• PEG-INTRON, the only pegylated interferon product for hepatitis
C approved for dosing according to patient body weight.
Other products are:
• REBETOL capsules for use with PEG-INTRON or INTRON A for
chronic hepatitis C,
• AERIUS/NEOCLARITYN, the non-sedating antihistamine for the
treatment of allergic rhinitis, chronic idiopathic urticaria, or
hives of unknown cause,
• NASONEX, the once-daily, nasal-inhaled corticosteroid for
allergies and nasal congestion relief in adults and children as
young as two years,
• CAELYX, the long-circulating pegylated liposomal formulation
of the cancer drug, doxorubicin, for the treatment of ovarian cancer,
Kaposi’s sarcoma and metastatic breast cancer, and TEMODAL,
capsules for certain types of brain tumors.
Sales of newer products together with strong performances from
many supporting brands have shown significant growth in the region.
In 2001, newer products made up more than 30 percent of the EUCAN
portfolio; in 2004, these products comprise nearly 60 percent of
the EUCAN portfolio.
Another important new product development is posaconazole, a novel
triazole agent, discovered and developed by Schering-Plough Research
Institute (SPRI), that exhibits potent antifungal activity in vitro
against a wide range of fungal pathogens, including both yeasts
and molds. SPRI is the research and development arm of Schering-Plough
Corporation. This new chemical entity is being developed for the
treatment of invasive fungal infections, which most often occur
in severely immunocompromised patients, such as organ transplant
patients or cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Posaconazole
provides an oral therapy option for these serious infections caused
by a variety of fungal organisms, including those resistant to other
drugs. A new drug application for posaconazole is currently under
review by the European Medicines Evaluation Agency.
Other initiatives designed to assure the continued success of Schering-Plough
in EUCAN include the effective use of business development opportunities
to strengthen our customer channels. The company also is developing
best-in-class sales and marketing capabilities at all levels, and
developing and executing comprehensive people management programs
that will enhance European and Canadian competencies and strengthen
our employer-of-choice image. These initiatives will optimize the
ways in which we work internally to achieve best-managed status
among our stakeholders.
Animal Health
The mission of Schering-Plough’s Animal Health division is
to improve the health of companion animals and the quality of animal
protein for human consumption. The company has a strong presence
in most countries within the EUCAN region in animal health products.
Of the major Animal Health market companies, the biggest operation
outside of the United States in terms of sales in 2004 is the U.K.,
followed by France, Germany, Spain, Canada and Italy. The breath
of their product line offers over 120 pharmaceutical, biological
and parasiticidal products to veterinarians, pet clinics, pet owners,
feedlots, and cattle, poultry, pig and fish farmers. With its own
dedicated research team, the Animal Health division is focused on
four major therapeutic areas: anti-infectives, anti-inflammatories,
parasiticides, and biologicals.
The EUCAN region is an important market for Schering-Plough as
demonstrated by the considerable investments we continue to make
in pharmaceutical marketing, sales, research, development and production
in these countries. We are a company that strives to be best in
responding as a partner to meet the diverse needs of the people
we serve, through a flow of innovative medicines, products and services.
We are working to transform the New Schering-Plough into a company
that will become a high-performance competitor. At the heart of
our new culture is the vision “to earn trust, every day”
among our stakeholders. We will strive to do this by operating in
a cross-functional, collaborative and customer-focused fashion.
