The goal of Discovery
Research is to identify new medical entities and recommend compounds
for development to maintain a strong pipeline for Schering-Plough.
Using the most advanced drug discovery technologies, our laboratory
scientists conduct research in various therapeutic areas, with special
attention given to finding novel compounds to address unmet medical
needs.
Schering-Plough strives to maintain a diverse discovery and development
portfolio to ensure a balanced mix of both small molecules and biologics
in the pipeline. Centers of Excellence have been established in
each of these areas. The biologics research at the Schering-Plough
Biopharma laboratories in Palo Alto, Calif., is concentrated on
monoclonal antibodies and therapeutic proteins. Research in small
molecule drug discovery takes place at our laboratories in Kenilworth,
N.J., and our newest laboratory in Cambridge, Mass. Our Milan, Italy,
research facility is also engaged in the discovery of small molecules,
with a special expertise in neurobiological indications.
Scientists with specific expertise in our major therapeutic areas
collaborate with groups throughout the discovery organization to
understand underlying disease mechanisms, elucidate novel targets
and discover potential new therapies to treat specific diseases
within each of these areas. Schering-Plough scientists also collaborate
with research partners from other pharmaceutical companies to build
the pipeline and drive product innovation.
